Section 3

Instructions for Non-Failover Single port installation.

Section 4

NOTE: If you plan to use TCP/IP, you will have to obtain your IP address and subnet information prior to installation. You may have a DHCP server that will provide the IP information automatically. If you are not sure if you have a DHCP server or what IP address to use, contact your network administrator.

SECTION 1

Duralink installation instructions for Windows NT 4.0 Workstation or Server when networking has previously been setup

  1. Place at least two Adaptec PCI adapters (such as the ANA-6911/TX's) in the system that you wish to use with Duralink drivers.

NOTE: To avoid conflicts on the network do not attach cables from both adapters to a common hub until after the drivers have been configured for Failover and the system has rebooted.

  2. Boot your system with Windows NT 4.0. (If you are using Windows NT 3.51, please refer to the Duralink for NT 351 file for appropriate driver installation instructions).

  3. Open the "My Computer" icon.

  4. Open the "Control Panel" icon.

  5. Open the "Network Setup" icon.

NOTE: If you do not currently have drivers loaded for Adaptec or Cogent PCI adapters, go to step #10.

    REMOVE EXISTING ADAPTEC ETHERNET DRIVERS

  6. Click on the "Adapters" tab in the Network Setup Applet.

  7. Remove any Adaptec or Cogent PCI adapters previously installed by highlighting the adapter and clicking on "Remove", and then click on "OK" when prompted. Remove all previously installed instances of the Adaptec or Cogent PCI adapter drivers.

  8. When finished, click "Close" to close the Network Setup applet.

  9. Click "Yes" when prompted to restart your computer.

NOTE: After booting this time, the Service Control Manager may display a message suggesting that at least one service failed to start. This is the result of having removed the driver(s) for the Adaptec or Cogent PCI adapters. All of the protocols and services are still being loaded, but without a network adapter driver. This message will go away after the Duralink driver is loaded.

  10. Click "OK" to close this dialog box.

    ADDING DURALINK DRIVERS

  11. Log on to the system and return to the "Network Setup" applet.

  12. Click on the "Adapters" tab.

Note: Do not allow the Network Setup applet to autodetect the network adapter.

  13. Click the "Add..." button.

  14. Click the "Have Disk..." button.

  15. You are now prompted to "Insert disk with software provided by the software or hardware manufacturer." Insert the disk with the DuraLink Failover driver. Be sure to enter the path to the directory where the driver and OEMSETUP file is located. Click "OK".

  16. The "Duralink Setup by Adaptec" window is now displayed. Choose the appropriate connection type for your network. If this information is not known, use the default selection which is "Autodetect Default Connection".

The options for connection type are:

    Autodetect Default Connection

Detects the cable type and optimal line speed for the specific Adaptec PCI adapter model in use. This is the default and recommended connection type to select. Refer to the NT Help file in the adapter configuration screen for the specific default settings for a given adapter.

    InitSense/Half Duplex

Detects the line speed (10 or 100 Mb/s) when the adapter initializes and is set for Half Duplex mode.

    InitSense/Full Duplex

Detects the line speed (10 or 100 Mb/s) when the adapter initializes and is set for Full Duplex mode.

    ActiveSense/Half Duplex

Detects the line speed (10 or 100 Mb/s) when the adapter initializes and continues to check to see if the line speed has changed. The adapter will be configured for Half Duplex mode.

    ActiveSense/Full Duplex

Detects the line speed (10 or 100 Mb/s) when the adapter initializes and continues to check to see if the line speed has changed. The adapter will be configured for Full Duplex mode.

    10 Mbps UTP

Forces the connection to 10 Mb/s in Half Duplex mode.

    10 Mbps UTP/Full Duplex

Forces the connection to 10 Mb/s in Full Duplex mode.

    100 Mbps

Forces the connection to 100 Mb/s in Half Duplex mode.

    100 Mbps/Full Duplex

Forces the connection to 100 Mb/s in Full Duplex mode.

    THIN

Use this when connecting to the BNC port of a Combo adapter. This is a 10 Mb/s Half Duplex only connection.

    THICK

Set the connection type to "THICK" if you have an adapter that has an AUI port and you will be using that port. This is a 10 Mb/s Half Duplex only connection.

Make sure that you have selected the appropriate connection type for your network. Also make sure that both failover ports have been configured to use the same connection type.

  17. After choosing your connection type click "Continue".

Note: Repeat steps 15 and 16 for each Adaptec adapter installed in your system. Each adapter can be identified by its unique PCI Bus/PCI Slot number.

  18. If SNMP has not been setup on this computer you will receive the following Setup Message:

"! SNMP Service is not installed. To activate SNMP and Adaptec network management features on this system, install the NT SNMP Service. On the network management station, use the configure option to configure Server related MIBs."

This is not an error, it is an information dialog. Click "OK" to continue.
