Bridge Chip Support for Quartet Adapters

Windows NT and Windows 95 require a system BIOS that supports the PCI-PCI bridge chip, when used with a multiport adapter like an Adaptec Quartet. For determining PCI bridge chip support, see Chapter 1 of the User's Guide, in the "Configuring Quartet Adapters" section.

Adaptec Setup Program

EMDIAG.EXE program in the root directory of your Adaptec diskette is designed to provide diagnostics and testing information about your adapter. For information about using EMDIAG.EXE, see EMDIAG.TXT in the \README directory of your Adaptec diskette.

Line Speed Autodetection

The Adaptec 10/100 adapters automatically detect and run at either 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps. Depending on the speed of the network onto which you connect them, these adapters will run at 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps. For 100 Mbps speeds, the TX adapters require the use of Category 5 UTP or IBM Type 1 STP cabling; the T4 adapters can use CAT 3, 4 or 5 UTP cabling for 100 Mbps.

AUI Port on Adaptec ANA-6901 Combo

If you are using an ANA-6901 Combo PCI with an AUI port, and are unable to make a network connection through the AUI port, you may be using a cable that does not meet IEEE 802.3 cable specifications (most likely because PIN 14 is not grounded). The ANA-6901 Combo PCI offers a "cable type" jumper that overrides cable type autodetection. When the jumper is positioned on the pins, you can use the adapter with AUI cables that do not meet IEEE specifications.

Link Status LED on T4 Adapters

The link status LED for the 100BASE-T4 adapters will blink if you are making a 100 Mbits/sec. connection. This blinking is a normal function of the LED, and indicates that a good link has been established. For 10 Mbits/sec. links, the link status LED on the 100BASE-T4 10/100 adapters remains constantly lit. This information does not pertain to Adaptec's ANA6911UC products.

Fast Ethernet Cabling Requirements

T4

Adaptec's 100Base-T4 Fast Ethernet adapters run over four pair of Category 3, 4, or 5 UTP cabling and RJ-45 connectors. The ANA-6911/T4 Combo supports 10 Mbps on BNC, or THINNET, cabling.

TX

Adaptec's 100Base-TX Fast Ethernet adapters run over two pair of Category 5 UTP or Type 1 STP cabling and RJ-45 connectors. For running at 10 Mbps, the ANA-6911/TX and ANA-6911/TX Combo adapters can also use Category 3 UTP cabling. The ANA-6911/TX Combo supports 10 Mbps on BNC, or THINNET, cabling.

FX

Adaptec's ANA-6910/FX-ST PCI and ANA-6910/FX-SC (100Base-FX) adapters run over 62.5/125 micron multimode fiber. The ANA-6910/FX-ST uses the "ST" bayonet-style twist-on connectors. The ANA-6910/FX-SC uses the newer "SC" style push-on connector.

Conflicts with DOS EMM386

For the U.S. version of MS-DOS: EMM386.EXE versions 4.48 and earlier conflict with the PCI bus I/O allocation scheme used by some system BIOS's. If you are using EMM386 and you suspect that it conflicts with your PCI device, upgrade EMM386.EXE to version 4.49. To upgrade EMM386.EXE, run the EMM386UP batch file in the EMM386UP subdirectory of the Adaptec setup diskette.

For the German version of MS-DOS: If you are using the German MS-DOS, you must upgrade EMM386.EXE to version 4.48. To upgrade the German version of EMM386.EXE, run the EMM386UP batch file in the EMM386UP\GERMAN subdirectory of the Adaptec setup diskette.

Support for 5 Volt PCI Slots

All Adaptec PCI adapters support 5 volt PCI slots.

NOTE: If your Adaptec PCI adapter fits into your PCI slot (i.e., the adapter notch lines up properly with the slot notch), then the PCI slot voltage matches the adapter voltage.

Latest BIOS

Use the latest FLASH BIOS for your PCI system to avoid problems caused by older, non-PCI compliant BIOSs.
