This list of errata describes differences in operation and/or documentation related to the products listed above.

DPT is constantly improving its products and documentation. In the case of conflict between various parts of the documentation set, this file should be considered to contain the newest information, followed by the instructions given by Storage Manager during Initial System Installation, followed by the manual(s).

General Errata:

If you are using Adaptec's SCSI BIOS 1.22 or higher with a bootable CD-ROM attached to the Adaptec controller, use the DPT Configuration Utility (CTRL-D) to ensure that EBDA Relocation for DPT controller(s) in the system is enabled.

Storage Manager:

• Repetitive use of Diagnostics within the same Storage Manager session may result in cosmetic and operational errors with Storage Manager. If several instances of diagnostics need to be executed, it is recommended to exit Storage Manager and restart Storage Manager with each instance.
• Device diagnostics run on unarrayed drives may be logged to the incorrect Event Log. START messages are logged in the proper logs; Stop messages are logged to the Event Log for the lowest SCSI device ID. Similarly, in the HBA Event Log, the Stop messages reflect the lowest SCSI device ID.
• Some older SCSI and SCSI-2 drives display N/A for their transfer rate in the Device Info window. These drives do not report their transfer rate and this is not a program error.
• The Quiet SCSI Bus feature is only available under DOS, Windows 3.1x and NetWare.
• Diagnostics in the SmartCache IV and SmartRAID IV versions of Storage Manager (versions 1K and higher) are not supported on previous SmartCache III HBAs.
• Caching parameters are not modifiable on drives that are components of an array. These parameters must be modified on the individual drives before the array is created.
• The Background Task Priority may be modified within Storage Manager, and the new value will be saved by the HBA. However Storage Manager will not display this new value.
• DO NOT reboot or power down your system during a low-level format, as your hard drive may be left in an unusable state.
• Storage Manager may improperly display memory and processor type for Pentium Pro motherboards.
• During DOS/Windows Configuration (DOS Storage Manager), if you choose not to copy all of the Storage Manager files to your hard drive, Storage Manager does not properly install the CD-ROM drivers. If you have a CD-ROM attached to the HBA, manually copy the CD-ROM drivers from Diskette #1.
• Storage Manager for OS/2 does not properly print to a file or printer on all menu choices.
• Full keyboard support in Storage Manager is available in DOS and Unix curses versions only. All other Storage Managers require a mouse to access all functions.
• When redirecting the SCSI ID on a multi-channel adapter, you must select an unused SCSI ID on Bus 0.
• Storage Manager for Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 will not minimize to the task bar.

Storage Manager (remote connections):

• Entering an incorrect password when logging into a server from a remote Storage Manager TCP/IP connection may result in an application hang. If this occurs, terminate the application process and log in using the correct password.
• Do not use Background Task Priority Settings in Storage Manager when Storage Manager is connected to a remote server.
• Storage Manger remote connections to Netware 3.xx servers are only supported by IPX/SPX.
• It is recommended that only one Storage Manager remote connection be made per server. Simultaneous Storage Manager remote connections to a single server may result in an unstable configuration.
• Remote connections via serial port are not supported by Storage Manager.
• For optimum accuracy, ensure that all machines involved with remote Storage Manager connections have synchronized time clocks.

Adapters:

PM3021/PM2041:

• You may notice that the DPT ISA HBAs Busy LED is significantly dimmer than the other products. This is normal and is not a problem with the HBA.
• SmartCache IV ISA HBAs default to I/O address 170h, IRQ15, DMA 5. If you are installing two or more adapters in the same system, the HBA addresses will conflict. To work around the problem, install the first HBA, then use the DPT Configuration Utility (Ctrl-D) to change the I/O, IRQ, and DMA settings to alternate values. Then install the second adapter and continue per the User's Manual.

HBAs with Floppy Option:

SCSI Bus ECC-Protection:

The following drives have been certified by DPT for ECC formatting:

The User's Manual incorrectly states that PM204x low-cost SmartCache IV low-cost adapters support ECC protection across the SCSI bus. SCSI bus ECC protection is a feature of SmartRAID and high-performance SmartCache IV adapters.

Operating System Errata:

Banyan Vines:

Vines 6.0 or higher has PCI support. Earlier versions require that the I/O Address on PCI adapters be set to something other than Auto.

OS/2:

• OS/2 Warp 4.0 Workstation generates a device driver exception error during shutdown if there is a CD-ROM present in the CD-ROM drive. No data is lost; the disk cache has already been flushed when the exception is generated.
• To perform a Selective Installation of OS/2 on a drive other than the default C:, please contact DPT Technical Support.

NextOS:

• If using a multi-channel or PCI HBA, NextOS version 3.3 or higher and DPT SCSI Driver version 3.31 or higher is required.
• Currently, NextOS has a maximum spindle capacity limitation of 2GB. If you create an array larger than 2GB, NextOS will not be able to access it.

Novell NetWare:

• If using NetWare 4.0 and workstation VLMs, use an HBA interrupt other than IRQ 15 for DPT HBAs in the server. If using NetWare duplexing, use an HBA interrupt other than IRQ 15 level for DPT HBAs in the server.
• f using NetWare duplexing, use an HBA interrupt other than IRQ 15 level for DPT HBAs in the server.
• After a RAID drive failure when a Hot Spare is attached, the Event Logger will display "Array Dead: Multiple Drive Failure". This only indicates that the Spare drive and failed drive have swapped places, and the failed drive is now referred to as a "Failed Hot Spare". There is no cause for alarm.
• Bringing down a NetWare server with the DOWN command will flush the HBA cache and then put the HBA into a write-thru mode until the system has exited to DOS. Since the NetWare 4.0 RESTART does an implicit DOWN before reloading, this command has a disastrous performance effect on the system and should not be used.
• DPT's monolithic .DSK NetWare drivers do not support a mixture of ISA, EISA and PCI adapters in the same system. If a mixture of DPT controller bus types is required, please use the DPTSCSI.HAM driver. The DPTSCSI.HAM driver is for use only with Netware 4.11. Please see your Novell documentation for use of Netware .HAM drivers and required Novell .NLMs to support .HAM drivers.

SCO and SCO UnixWare:

The curses version of Storage Manager does not allow the user to low-level format a drive if an array is present on the same controller. A work-around is to boot DOS and use the DOS version of Storage Manager.

SunSoft Solaris:

• Solaris requires the DPT ISA HBA floppy to be at the Primary I/O location if the hard disk I/O is at Primary. Likewise, the floppy must be at Secondary if the hard disk is at Secondary. The floppy address must be configured as stated, even if it is disabled.
• On Intel Extended Express motherboards, the INIT 0 shutdown command will not force an automatic reboot of the system.

Windows 3.1x:

• The Windows 32-bit IDE driver will not load if the DPT HBA is present. This forces Windows to use the standard 16-bit INT13 driver if an IDE drive is present, causing a very slight performance difference during accesses to the IDE. The performance of the DPT HBA is not affected.
• Do not have an ASPI Tape Backup application accessing the tape if you are going to switch to a DOS window.

Windows 95:

• DPT software striping is not supported under Windows 95. This includes software RAID-0, striping across channels or adapters. If upgrading to Windows 95 and you have any of the above listed configurations, contact DPT Technical Support prior to performing the upgrade.
• Windows 95 uses the same driver for all DPT adapters. therefore, Windows 95 will identify all DPT PCI controllers as a DPT PM2124A PCI SCSI Host Adapter.

Windows NT:

If you encounter an NT error during a video board configuration either during boot or installation, set the EBDA Relocation option in the DPT Configuration Utility (CTRL-D) to ENABLED.

Motherboard Errata:

Compaq 4500:

Intel Express:

The Intel Express motherboard does not work properly with DPT EISA adapters.

DPT EISA Host Adapters with SmartROM 3.D1 and higher are not currently supported on the Intel Extended Express.

Device Errata:

Exabyte:

The Exabyte 8200 8mm DAT tape drive is not supported.

IBM:

IBM DORS 32160 drives cannot be mixed with other manufacturers' drives in the same array.

Micropolis:

• The Micropolis 4110 requires a minimum Micropolis firmware version of 322L.
• The Micropolis 3243 and 1991 drives require a minimum Micropolis firmware version of 1128Q4D.

Plextor:

The Plextor 6Plex CD-ROM drive is not supported on a channel that also has a RAID array present.
