Non-Volatile RAM

Adaptec, Inc. does not manufacture any SCSI controllers which retain customer data in a non-volatile RAM area, when the SCSI card is in a power-off condition or when the SCSI card is removed from the computer.

Our typical cards like the AHA-2940AU or the AHA-2940UW contain a RISC processor with :

  • 64 byte scratch ram for SCSI bus setup, current operation, and system parameters
  • 29-bit x 512 RAM for processing with microcode loaded at initialization
  • A 1024 bit Serial EEPROM, for storage of non-volatile system configuration information for SCSI device and card parameters
  • 64K x 8 flash memory BIOS code

Other host adapters may contain additional volatile memory for processing purposes.

There is no storage or non-volatile caching of SCSI data on any Adaptec Host Adapter. Adaptec RAID controllers use 16 MB SIMM RAM for parity generation when used in a RAID 0 or 5 configuration for performance or as a method of reducing the time involved in recovering a defective RAID drive.

All RAM in an Adaptec host adapter is cleared during a power-on condition when the host adapter is initialized. All RAM in an Adaptec host adapter is cleared during a power-off condition, when the host computer is powered off or the SCSI card is removed from the system.

This information is current as of March 9, 1999, and Adaptec undertakes no obligation to update it.
